Aree Irrigate-120   Detection of Irrigated Areas

The service, designed to meet the needs of the Reclamation and Irrigation Consortia, allows to identify and map the irrigated areas using satellite images. In particular, it allows to identify the irrigated areas without permission or water rights: by integration with the Web-Gis, it allows water managers to crosscheck the map of the irrigated areas with the cadastral water rights database.

HOW IT WORKS

The system is based on the temporal variability of vegetative vigor (NDVI). Starting from a minimum number of processed satellite images, it is possible to identify the crop growth trends and, depending on the species declared, verify the link between growth curve development and requested water supply. By crossing the information layer of the registered cadastral particles and the classified map, the areas in which there are an ongoing illicits will be verified through direct intervention in the field.

This technique is reported as an official methodology for the estimation of the irrigated areas in the Report of the Environment DG of the European Union, and it is reported as the only one actually applicable on a large scale.
